What are Tandem Buggies?

As if it were not difficulty enough to have and raise a healthy child, you must also know how to sort through the seemingly endless options in baby carriage devices. There are buggies, strollers and pushchairs; twins, doubles, triples, side by sides, tandems and so on. A bit confusing at first blush, but the following should help sort through the options.

First, the term stroller is mostly used in America, and it pertains to lightweight, typically small pushchairs, that tend to be easy to fold down and transport from place to place. There are different varieties of these: some are made for newborns specifically, so they recline, allowing the baby to sleep. But for the most part, these are upright seats and are used with children who are between 6 and 12 months.

There is typically less padding on these pushschairs than would be the case in a buggy, which is another reason why they are not often used with very young babies (under 6 months of age).  However, different models have different features, and it pays to look around for one with right features for you and your baby. Look for those that also provide an easy fold down and fold up mechanism, and one that is not likely to encourage fingers to get trapped in them. You should be able to easily fold down the device with one hand.

Also, look for one that is sizable enough both for the baby and for the many items that babies often require. You will also want to consider how much padding is in stroller and whether that is sufficient for making the ride comfortable. And, also consider how you will get the baby safe from the weather elements; in other words, is there a rain guard and/or a sun shade of some kind?

Forward facing pushchairs are typically somewhat heavier than strollers discussed above, though with the new highly durable light materials used today, the difference has blurred over time. There are literally hundreds of different choices in forward facing pushchairs, and when add all the option choices, the options multiply quickly. However, there are few things to consider when evaluating forward facing pushchairs.

Look for those with a small wheel in the front that swivels. This will provide you with added control when navigating the pushchair, something that comes in handy when walking down crowded streets and through stores or restaurants. Along the same lines, the wheel base should be wide enough to prevent easy tipping.

For the child’s comfort, the seat should be able to recline; look for one that has at least three different settings for reclining. And look for those that offer five point seat belt systems, which are necessary for keeping the baby secure and in place. Finally, you want to make sure the device will clean up easily, and a good way to do this is to look for fabric that is removable and washable.
