If you think that getting street transportation for your little one(s) is just a matter of finding the right buggy, think again. There is also the whole wide universe of buggy accessories to consider to go along with those carefree, wind-in-hair rides down streets and through parks.
Buggy footmuffs are those blanket or sleeping bag like devices that are used to keep the baby warm through its buggy rides. Some literally are little blankets, and come in a variety of soft fabrics. These represent perhaps the most practical of the footmuffs, and certainly the easiest to use. They are also the least expensive. On the other end of the spectrum are footmuffs that look like they were pretty much custom tailored for the child. They are form fitting, and the child slides into them. Often a zipper comes up the front to enclose the little one and keep him warm. Yet another option looks a bit like a taco shell. The baby slids into the shell and is kept warm by the surrounding blanket material. These occupy the mid range of the price scale.
There are baby bags which are designed to fit onto the buggy as well. These bags range in size from a large handbag size, to something that looks like mid-sized backpack. Most are made with a sturdy nylon material. Some are more like small suitcases. These bags are very handy for holding toys, drinks, food, and other items necessary for keeping the baby and yourself comfortable.
Carrycots fit into buggies, but are removable for those times when you want to have a portable baby and don’t want, or can’t, bring the stroller along (when going into a restaurant for example). These cots ranges considerably in size and price, but their convenience is hard to beat. Some come with carry rails (like with a picnic basket), while others have straps that can fit on to an adult.
Other accessories include water bottles, coffee cup holders, net baskets for storing items that need to be reached for quickly, clips for attaching a parasol, hooks for hanging purses and other necessary items. You can also get mosquito netting that is cut to fit the particular buggie. And there is a host of items for the buggy itself, including lubricant to stop squeaky wheels, spare tubes, a tire pump. And there are simple blankets, cup holders for the children, sun shades, small caddies, liners for the inside of the baby compartment.
While many of these items are designed particularly for various makes of buggies, many items can be substituted with simple items found around the house. The cost of buying all of these, or even the most essential ones can add up, so it is a good idea to focus on the items that will provide the greatest value over the time in which strolling will be a part of your lives.
